An initially significant relationship between primary process and creativity was found to be based on a common third variable, productivity, and interrelationships among primary process subscores were also found to been based in large part on the common variable of productivity.

Abstract

Summary The effect of productivity on the relationship between primary process thinking and creativity and on the interrelationships of primary process subscores was investigated in a group of 100 male college students. An initially significant relationship between primary process and creativity was found to be based on a common third variable, productivity. Interrelationships among primary process subscores were also found to be based in large part on the common variable of productivity. The contention that the aggressive-formal primary process subscore correlation would be significantly higher than the libidinal-formal correlation was not supported. Interpretations of the results of previous investigations of primary process were called into question and the recognition of the relevance of productivity for future studies was stressed.
