Abstract

What are racial institutions and structures, and, more importantly, what insights does sociological theory offer to understand them? This entry traces the genealogy of three theoretical frameworks that are examined from institutional and structural perspectives: institutional racism, racial formation, and racialized social systems. The distinguishing features of each of these theories are delineated, as are some of their inherent strengths and weaknesses.
