Abstract

In recent years have emerged needs to clarify organizational problems and their ramifications before embarking on elaborate OR techniques to solve them.Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) and cognitive Mapping have both addressed these needs. Some users report problems with ssm at the conceptual modelling Stage. Cognitive Mapping and Repertory Grids can also cause problems of their insistence on polarity.During a major study in the crop protection Industry using Cognitive Mapping, disjunction between poles suggested cognitive structures in some respondents analogous to the "real world/ideal world" dichotomy favoured by SSM. Use of this polarity is discussed as a possible means to overcome problems in building Conceptual Models, drawing upon experiences in 82 organizations.
