Abstract
Severe sepsis is one of the major causes of mortality in intensive care units (ICUs) around the world. There are few epidemiological studies based on ACCP/SCCM consensus conference criteria. The incidence of severe sepsis is largely unknown in countries like Brazil.

American Journal of Obstetrics and GynecologyPreeclampsia: An excessive maternal inflammatory response to pregnancy
1,855 Citations1999Christopher W.G. Redman, Gavin Sacks +1 more
It is argued that preeclampsia arises when a universal maternal intravascular inflammatory response to pregnancy decompensates in particular cases, which may occur because either the stimulus or the maternal response is too strong.
Archives of SurgeryMultiple-Organ Failure
1,303 Citations1985R. Jan A. Goris
It is concluded that sepsis is probably not the essential cause of MOF, and an alternative hypothesis is presented involving massive activation of inflammatory mediators by severe tissue trauma or intra-abdominal sepsi, resulting in systemic damage to vascular endothelia, permeability edema, and impaired oxygen availability to the mitochondria despite adequate arterial oxygen transport.
American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care MedicinePneumonia in Intubated Patients: Role of Respiratory Airway Care
702 Citations1996Jordi Rello, Rosario Sonora +4 more
It is concluded that leakage of colonized subglottic secretions around the cuff of the endotracheal tube is the most important risk factor for pneumonia within the first 8 d of intubation.
Artificial OrgansMolecular Adsorbent Recycling System (MARS): Clinical Results of a New Membrane‐Based Blood Purification System for Bioartificial Liver Support
606 Citations1999Stange, Mitzner +16 more
A new membrane separation system that is nearly impermeable to proteins but enables the exchange of water soluble and protein bound toxins by a special membrane and a recycled protein containing dialysate is described.
Journal of Applied PhysiologyA comprehensive equation for the pulmonary pressure-volume curve
582 Citations1998José G. Venegas, R. Scott Harris +1 more
It is demonstrated that this sigmoidal equation can fit with excellent precision inflation and deflation P-V curves of normal lungs and of lungs with alveolar derecruitment and/or a region of gas trapping while yielding robust and physiologically useful parameters.
Intra-abdominal Pressure in the Intensive Care Unit: Clinical Tool or Toy?
530 Citations2001Manu L. N. G. Malbrain
Intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and the abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) have recently also been identified in about 20 to 30% of critically ill medical patients, and both can help in early detection and prevention of morbidity and mortality.
Critical Care MedicineA pilot study of coupled plasma filtration with adsorption in septic shock*
482 Citations2002Claudio Ronco, Alessandra Brendolan +13 more
In patients with septic shock, coupled plasmafiltration-adsorption combined with hemodialysis was associated with improved hemodynamics compared with continuous venovenous hemodiafiltration, suggesting a potential role for blood purification in the treatment of septicshock.
Critical Care MedicineCoupled plasma filtration-adsorption in a rabbit model of endotoxic shock
339 Citations2000Ciro Tetta, Luca Gianotti +8 more
Coupled plasma filtration‐adsorption improved survival in a rabbit model of endotoxic shock and may be an extracorporeal treatment capable of removing structurally different inflammatory mediators associated with sepsis.
Journal of Clinical Monitoring and ComputingPartial CO2 Rebreathing Indirect Fick Technique for Non-Invasive Measurement of Cardiac Output
329 Citations2000Dinesh G. Haryadi, Joseph Orr +3 more
The results of this canine study show that NICO performed as well, and in some cases better, than other currently available non-invasive cardiac output techniques over a wide range of cardiac outputs.
Intensive Care MedicineHealth-related quality of life of multiple organ dysfunction patients one year after intensive care
312 Citations2000Ville Pettilä, Anne Kaarlola +1 more
One year after intensive care the survivors had a lower QOL than an age-matched general population with clinically relevant further impairment of MOD patients in vitality and emotional role limitations.
Critical Care MedicineOutcomes of critically ill elderly patients: Is high-dependency care for geriatric patients worthwhile?
308 Citations1999Shirley Ip, Yyc Leung +2 more
The GHDU achieved treatment results similar to those achieved by an ICU and is therefore seen as an innovative way of treating critically ill elderly patients.
New England Journal of MedicineSystemic Absorption of Food Dye in Patients with Sepsis
300 Citations2000James P. Maloney, Ann C. Halbower +6 more
Renal FailureA Prospective Comparative Study of Moderate Versus High Protein Intake for Critically Ill Patients with Acute Renal Failure
298 Citations1997Rinaldo Bellomo, John Seacombe Bapplsci +5 more
It is concluded that a high-protein diet can be safely administered to critically ill patients with acute renal failure receiving continuous renal replacement therapy and improves nitrogen balance when compared to moderate protein intake.
AnaesthesiaVariations in expenditure between adult general intensive care units in the UK
287 Citations2001D. L. Edbrooke, S. Ridley +2 more
Findings from the second pilot study of the cost block method in 21 adult general intensive care units (ICUs) showed that 93% of the variation in expenditure on disposable equipment could be explained by the number of ICU beds, theNumber of admissions and the presence of a high‐dependency unit (HDU).
Critical Care MedicinePrognostic significance of indocyanine green clearance in critically ill surgical patients
283 Citations1984A. Mohsen Kholoussy, David A. Pollack +1 more
It is believed that indocyanine green clearance in the critically ill surgical patient is a simple, useful measure of hepatic function which is directly associated with outcome.
Acta Anaesthesiologica ScandinavicaA simplified method for separate measurements of lung and chest wall mechanics in ventilator‐treated patients
266 Citations1999Sigurbergur Kárason, K. L. Karlsen +2 more
A methodology with fluid‐filled catheters for intratracheal and esophageal pressure measurements, which is difficult to insert in unconscious patients, is developed.

PubMedSudden deaths of Croatian hemodialysis patients in October 2001.
244 Citations2001́ Gašparovic, Rajko Ostojić +2 more
Analysis of all possible risk elements associated with hemodialysis revealed that dialysis devices, dialyzate, water, and personnel were different in all cases, and that the only common denominator in all events was dialyzer P-15 or P-18, manufactured by Baxter, USA, and distributed by Pliva, Croatia.
