The integration of a fuzzy approach with the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology to evaluate design alternatives’ environmental performance during the new product development (NPD) process is discussed.

Abstract

Abstract This paper discusses the integration of a fuzzy approach with the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology to evaluate design alternatives' environmental performance during the new product development (NPD) process. A fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (fuzzy AHP) is used with a fuzzy extension of the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (fuzzy TOPSIS) to prioritize design options. A case study is described to illustrate the use of the proposed method.
