Abstract
Under certain experimental conditions, the fact that a given word (e.g., lilac) belongs to a relatively large category (plants) was affirmed more quickly than the fact that it belongs to a relatively small category (flowers). This result, in conjunction with other results obtained in the current experiment, tends to contradict the predictions of previous theories of word meaning and lends support to a feature selection theory derived fromGarner's (The processing of information and structure, Potomac, Md.: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 1974) critical realism position.

Four experiments dealt with the verification of semantic relations and indicated that semantic distance could predict RTs in another categorization task and choices in an analogies task and place constraints on a theory of semantic memory.
