Facilitating Transfer to a Nursing Home

During a recent retrospective review of patients treated at the Geriatric Rehabilitation Unit, it became apparent that the classical division of alcoholism in elderly into Type 1 and Type 2 patterns is an oversimplification.

Abstract

To the Editor:—Our community has one general hospital and four nursing homes. For the past two years the Directors of Nursing at these nursing homes have met monthly to discuss common problems. One common problem involves transfer orders for patients moving from the hospital into a nursing home. Each nursing home seems to have its own particular admission regulations. Examples of these include the date of the last chest x-ray, PPD status, and the wording of no-code orders. This causes confusion and frustration for physicians who are writing transfer orders.
