Abstract
An epidemiological study conducted on 1,278 persons revealed that enterobiasis was surprisingly widespread: 75% to 97% among boarding-school children, 78% among long-term hospital patients, and at least 31% among army recruits. A single standard dose of 100 mg of mebendazole was about 90% effective against enterobiasis in both children and adults. No side effects were reported even at several times the recommended dose (100 mg) in small children. Mebendazole is practically not absorbed and probably acts by blocking the glucose uptake by nematodes in the colon.
