Abstract
As part of a study of the costing of road accidents and the value of accident prevention, the paper summarises the results of a two-phase research programme designed to estimate values of life and safety. The research is being carried out under a UK Department of Transport contract. In order to assess the feasibility of the questionnaire approach used in the study a series of psychological laboratory tests were conducted using 120 subjects. The results of the tests showed that the majority of subjects displayed more consistency and awareness of risks, particularly transport associated risks, than had been expected. (Author/TRRL)
