Abstract

This chapter is included in Section II of ARIST: basic techniques and technologies. It is devoted to speech synthesis and recognition. The author notes the obvious fact that speech has the potential to serve as the most natural of all human-computer interface and that by communicating to and from a computer via the spoken word the user is freed from the keyboard, mouse, printer, and screen. Through a selection of the available literature, this chapter: (1) provides an introduction to the subject; (2) discusses speech synthesis and speech recognition: history, current work, human factors, and applications; (3) ecxamines library applications; and (4) looks to future use and development for these technologies
