Abstract

The forests of Central Evenkia are made up largely of Larix gmelinii, whereas Larix sibirica and Larix czekanowskii are distributed only in the western part of the area. In this area, forest fires are a great concern. Increasing resource exploitation and extremely poor forest fire protection in the north are the two factors accounting for the high rate of forest burning. As permafrost is continuous in the area, fires strongly disrupt the ecological equilibrium (balance) of northern forests.
