Excerpt Epidemiologic evidence of an association between hepatitis B virus and hepatocellular carcinoma is strong, but evidence of a similar association between non-A, non-B hepatitis virus infecting animals is weak.

Reports from Japan (1-3) and Nigeria (4) suggest that hepatitis B serum markers are negative in 5% to 28% of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.
