Abstract
Abstract The notion that an ice-free zone may have existed between the Cordilleran and Laurentide ice sheets at the height of the last (late Wisconsinan) glaciation originated in the last century (Chamberlin 1895; Jackson and Clague 1991) with out reference to the peopling of the New World. The discovery of artifacts with extinct Ice Age megafauna at Folsom, New Mexico, in 1927 led to the suggestion that people may have entered the New World via a passage between ice sheets (Johnston 1933; Antevs 1937).
