Abstract
Abstract For nearly 30 years, politicians have all been proclaiming the importance of maintaining elderly people in their own homes, by quoting from numerous official reports produced by experts and important civil servants. Behind this happy unanimity, what are the aims, implicit or not, of maintien omicile, and what means are available to achieve them? How do they fit in with the social and health services and with the support given by the person’s family, which is rarely mentioned? Does the central plan of action-services for home help and for help with personal care-answer the needs of the population it serves? In an attempt to answer these questions, this chapter will examine the historical development of the maintien a domicile of elderly people, the existing system and its relation to other measures, and the fragmentary data available on its operation.
