Towards a cohesive curriculum tourism

Abstract

This paper addresses a controversial topic in tourism scholarship which is simultaneously a problem and an opportunity in tourism education: the philosophical issue of academic disciplines and specifically, the question of a distinct discipline in tourism studies. It is argued that the orthodox approach to tourism education, multi-disciplinary studies, has become an impediment. It is suggested that a new discipline can be created by organizing the existing body of knowledge and that such a discipline can become the core of an inter-disciplinary approach. Certain characteristics of an embryonic discipline are outlined and innovations in this area at Sydney Technical College are discussed. Cet article adresse un sujet contesté dans la recherche en tourisme qui est à la fois un problème et une opportunité dans l'enseignement du tourisme: la question philosophique des disciplines universitaires et en particulier la question d'un discipline distinct pour les études en tourisme. L'article soutient que la façon traditionnelle d'aborder l'enseignement du tourisme, c'est-à-dire une façon pluridisciplinaire, est devenue un obstacle. On suggère qu'il serait possible de créer un nouveau discipline en organisant le corps de connaissances existentes et qu'un tel discipline pourrait devenir le coeur d'un enseignement pluridisciplinaire. On expose les grandes lignes d'un discipline en germe et discute des innovations dans ce domaine à Sydney Technical College.
