The linguistic interpretation of aphasic syndromes: Agrammatism in Broca's aphasia, an example

Abstract

One of the most striking characteristics typical of the speech of Broca's aphasics is its agrammatism — the omission of 'function' words and inflectional morphemes. Agrammatism is generally viewed as being symptomatic of a syntactic deficit. We argue here that such an account lacks grammatical systematicity, and that the only uniform and systematic interpretation of this deficit is in terms of phonological structure. A natural class consisting of 'function' words and some bound morphemes can be defined with reference to the junctural properties of sentences which characterize phonological words. It is this class of elements which tend to be omitted in agrammatic speech. The goal of this paper is not only to provide an hypothesis for the interpretation of one aphasic syndrome, but also to test and illustrate the efficacy of paying close attention to substantive universals of grammatical structure in proposing accounts of linguistic deficits. Une des plus frappantes caractéristiques typique du langage des aphasiques de Broca est l'agrammatisme caractérisé par l'ommission des mots "fonctionnels" et des morphèmes indiquant des inflexions. L'agrammatisme est le plus souvent considéré comme symptomatique d'un déficit syntaxique. Nous pensons que cette optique manque de rigueur grammaticale et que seule une interprétation de ce déficit en termes de structure phonologique peut être cohérente et systématique. Une classe naturelle composée de mots de fonction et de certains morphèmes liés, peut être définie par référence aux propriétés de frontières des phrases lesquelles définissent les mots phonologiques. C'est cette classe d'éléments qui tend à disparaître dans le discours agrammatical. Le but de cet article n'est pas seulement de fournir une hypothèse permettant d'interpréter un syndrome aphasique, mais aussi de tester et d'illustrer l'idée qu'il est efficace de considérer attentivement les universaux substantifs de la structure grammaticale lorsqu'il s'agit de rendre compte des déficits linguistiques.
