Abstract

During the last two years, the- scope of 'science studies' in Sweden has been broadened to put the accent on the social dimension, and also to include technology in this context. Both the Vitterhetsakademien (Royal Academy of Antiquities, History and Social Studies) and the Riksbankens Jubileumsf ond (Swedish Bank Tercentenary Fund) have sponsored conferences to discuss themes and problems concerning 'man in technological society', 'attitudes to technology', or the topic 'technology, politics and social debate'.' However, it is a considerable step from the sketches and shopping lists presented to such meetings, to solid research and the establishment of a coherent community of investigators. At present four university groups in different parts of the country are making an effort to establish a national network to this end.2 My account concentrates on both the background to this initiative, and their work.3
