Abstract
The intrinsic-extrinsic distinction has been used in a variety of ways to describe employee motivation and to explain organizational behavior. Various usages are reviewed, categorized and discussed. The usefulness of the intrinsic-extrinsic distinction is evaluated and recommendations are made on how it might be more explicitly applied.
