Abstract
Twenty-six cats with small bilateral lesions in various parts of the amygdaloid complex were studied behaviorally in active-avoidance, passive-avoidance and visual-discrimination tests. The acquisition of an active-avoidance response is impaired following lesions in the rostral part of the lateral nucleus as well as by lesions in an area containing the ventral amygdalofugal fibers which project from this part of the amygdaloid complex. This area has been identified as a “flight zone” in previous stimulation and ablation experiments. Passive avoidance, by contrast, is impaired when lesions encroach upon the medial nucleus or the stria terminalis, or both. No impairment in visual discrimination was found in any of the lesioned animals.
