Abstract

Abstract The multitrait‐multimethod (MTMM) framework originally proposed by Campbell and Fiske has long guided efforts to assess the discriminant and convergent validity of measures. Numerous statistical approaches for analyzing MTMM matrices have been proposed. Surprisingly, little consensus has developed on the most appropriate method for analyzing these matrices or what criteria should be used as a basis for choosing the most appropriate method. We provide a nontechnical review of statistical approaches for analyzing MTMM matrices. We conclude with a set of general recommendations regarding the analysis of MTMM data.
