Introduction to Brunswikian Theory and Method

Abstract

This chapter acquaints readers with the basics of probabilistic functionalism so that its appeal can be seen for cognitive engineering. It reviews some of the core principles of Brunswik's probabilistic functionalism, concentrating on: functionalism, vicarious functioning, probabilism, and representative design. It also outlines some theoretical extensions and lines of empirical research that have led to social judgment theory, a Brunswikian approach to the study of judgment. In addition, it draws connections between the chapters in this book and aspects either of Brunswik's original theory or its subsequent extension in the form of social judgment theory. In particular, it touches some of the applications and extensions of social judgment theory. It is shown that Brunswik's probabilistic functionalism emphasizes adjustment to the world and the mediated nature of that adjustment.
