Abstract
In this article we discuss future time perspective (FTP) and future orientation (FO) as two cognitive–motivational conceptualizations of future thinking. We first delineate each conceptualization and conclude by highlighting some of its commonalities and differences. We then summarize research on the motivational antecedents and consequences of FTP and FO. Finally we relate our research to three issues: Why is it that not all future thinking prompt behavior? Does culture (as well as other aspects of the social milieu) matter? How can our research findings be implemented to improve individuals' prospects?
