In 1980, Hsu reviewed 16 major studies on the outcome of anorexia nervosa published between 1954 and 1979 and came to the conclusion that outcome depends largely on two factors: (1) the selection of cases that constitute the series, and (2) the criteria and method with which outcome is assessed.
