Abstract
This paper criticizes work and family research for viewing work and family largely as conflicting role responsibilities. This occurs in spite of evidence that work and family role responsibilities appear to be mutually beneficial for both work and family systems. Using biological analogies, this paper suggests that it may be useful to examine work and family relationship from a symbiotic perspective. This includes both parasitism and mutualism. The paper concludes by suggesting ways in which this analogy could guide future research efforts in work and family roles. © 2002 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.
