Abstract

The RCN's annual employment survey of 10000 nurses across the UK has found that the nursing profession continues to face problems relating to low morale and staff shortages (RCN, 2004). For example, the RCN claims that there are currently around 25000 nursing vacancies within the NHS, two-thirds of nurses feel that there are insufficient staff, one in 10 nurses plan to leave nursing in the next 2 years, and one-third of nurses would leave the profession if they could.
