Abstract

Miles and Snow's four different types of strategy are discussed and operationally defined in terms of three recurring organizational problems. A field study of 47 firms investigated the typology and the relationship between the typology, organizational size and organizational performance. Four different strategies resembling Miles and Snow's typology were found. Results indicate that organizational size can explain differences in strategy and that the relationship between strategy and performance varies with organizational size.
