Abstract
This field experiment in which more than 1,100 operative and managerial employees participated investigated the effects of removing a performance contingent pay plan. The analysis revealed a highly significant decline in performance, particularly when compared to the control group. Comparable although sometimes counterbalancing effects occurred on the five dimensions of satisfaction measured.
