Abstract
An educational program for mothers was carried out at the Maternity of the State University of Campinas Hospital (MUH) in order to increase the duration of breastfeeding. The purpose was to inform patients about the advantages of breastfeeding and to teach them how to solve simple problems that occur during nursing. 200 women from the MUH participated in interviews and in educational talks while another 200 women from a different maternity served as a control group. A significantly larger proportion of women in the experimental group were breastfeeding at each month age of the child. The influence of the program was more marked among older women those with less education and those with older partners. (authors)
