The False Dualism

With the rapid growth of large systems and networks, library departments have become so large they seem to have taken a life of their own, causing a dualism that does not really exist.

Abstract

Abstract We all know the history of the post-World War II explosion of information and technology and the stresses that have been occurring within our profession. As staffs grew and services expanded, finding a balance between the traditional library and the technological library has become very difficult and a problem we all grapple with daily. Unfortunately, with the rapid growth of large systems and networks, library departments have become so large they seem to have taken a life of their own. During this process, they lose track of the other departments that make the library what it is, causing a dualism that does not really exist. Some of the questions puzzling me are, what are we going to do about it, and how are we going to stop this false dualism?
