Abstract
Helen Rainbird, who is Reader in Social Sciences at Nene College, Northampton, draws on detailed case study evidence from 21 undertakings in the public and private sector to consider the organisation of the training function. She finds that, although the integration of the training function into other policy areas, and of employees through involvement in training programmes, had not occurred to a great extent, nevertheless some of the undertakings had shown themselves capable of developing a more strategic approach to training. This was notably the case in two high technology companies, operating in highly competitive international markets, and in the public sector, where there was a stronger tradition and culture of training.
