Abstract

To improve the results of automatic EEG analysis, a recently suggested method combined up to 20 different frequency analysis output values in order to characterize the EEG frequency pattern. The method was based on multivariant statistical analysis of results obtained with a rather large group of normal individuals. The practical applicability of the method was tested on a well defined material comprising the EEGs of 46 neurosurgical patients with verified intra-cranial lesions. The laterality and intensity of EEG abnormalities served as parameters for purposes of statistical comparisons. In three of four tests, the combined EEG quotient calculated from 20 EEG variables displayed the highest correlation with both visual and clinical findings (although the differences between various correlation coefficients were not statistically significant in all cases). Only insignificant differences were obtained in the fourth test. To demonstrate the possible applicability of the method for additional processing of frequency analysis output values in routine EEG, numerical output was supplemented with automatic verbal print-out of the EEG description. According to a subjective estimate, the measurement of the combined quotient provided results comparable with those obtained in visual assessment provided by an experienced electroencephalographer, and the results of automatic analysis could be presented in a more accurate form. It is believed that frequency analysis may thus become a useful supplement to conventional EEG assessment and conceivably part of future complex EEG automation.
