Abstract
Picophytoplanktonic community structure is composed of three components: Prochlorococcus marinus (Pro), Synechococcus spp. (Syn) and picoeukaryotes (Peu). The nitrogen nutrients N, = NO, + NOz t NH, are one of the important controlling factors which determine community structure. In the open ocean, when the photic layer is i N, depleted (N, 0.1 pM, the Peu constitute the major component. In atoll-lagoonal and ocean boarding waters, when NO, t NO2 0.1 UM, small concentrations of NH4' appear to promote Syn abundance. Nevertheless in lagoonal waters additional factors such as the average depth of the lagoon and nitrogen fixation must be taken into account.
