Abstract

This study investigates the nature and sources of work satisfaction among registered nurses. Data from 312 nurses as well as 1,303 workers representing a variety of other occupations are analyzed. The analysis indicates that the level of work satisfaction among nurses tends to be somewhat lower than the levels found in other professional occupational groups. Additionally, the study investigates the work values of nurses. The results suggest that the intrinsic rewards of task autonomy (significance and involvement), nature of supervision, and salary are the major determinants of work satisfaction. The data further indicate that the determinants of nurse work satisfaction correspond to the hierarchy of work values. The administrative implications of these findings are subsequently discussed.
