Abstract
This paper analyzes punctuated equilibrium theory from evolutionary biology and its analogies to organizational transformation. The published results of punctuated equilibrium theorists are reanalyzed using self-organization theory. This alternative model offers the same image of transformative change--stasis punctuated by rapid system transformation--yet lluminates more complexity than punctuated equilibrium.
