Delivering sad or bad news provides a major opportunity and significant risk for both patient and practitioner. When bad news is broken insensitively, the impact can be negative for both giver and recipient. For the recipient especially, the effect can be long-lasting and can include unnecessary pain and suffering, misunderstanding or inadequate understanding of the condition, and compromised decision making. For the clinician, ineffective or damaging delivery of bad news can be traumatic and aversive, leading to decreased personal and professional satisfaction and the propensity to avoid such situations in the future, even when necessary.
