Abstract

Many studies of family relations have demonstrated the influence of either one or both parents on the child's characteristics, behavior, and development. However, a greater understanding of the cognitive development of each child in the family might be possible if more direct attention were given to the influence of siblings on the child. Irish (1964) pointed out the strength and positive values of the sibling bonds throughout life, rating them second only to mother-child ties. He stated:
