Abstract
We dedicate this volume to the memory of John H. Knowles, friend, colleague, and health visionary, whose career was suddenly and tragically struck down by cancer. The example he set as Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital, of sometimes irreverent but always pointed criticism of medical conventionality, of the dehumanization of health care, and of the need for health promotion and disease prevention, has never left us.We hope this volume will, in at least a small way, serve as a reminder of his example and as a tribute to the memory of a man larger than life-a largeness inseparable from the inner strength and inspiration of his wife, Teedy.
