Abstract

We are applying transgenic technology to dairy cattle aiming at the production of biomédical proteins in their milk. Among a number of beneficial points of the transgenic approach, over already existing protein production methods, is the possibility of being able to provide low-volume, high-cost biomedical proteins for intravenous use at low cost as well as high-volume, low-cost biomedical or nutritional proteins at low cost; in a self-replicating and self-duplicating production system and in an environment-friendly way. The potential availability of any such protein, both naturally existing ones or artificially designed proteins, in abundance in milk as a medium, may also be of inspiration to those researchers that are developing controlled drug release methods; drugs delivered by oral route involving proteins or peptides including for those cases where methods for delivery may have been worked out but where the very large quantities of the proteins or peptides involved would make any clinically relevant application prohibitively expensive to the patients and their insurers.
