The allocation of nursing students to wards and clinical areas often leads to much debate, confusion and controversy over their supernumerary status. A common complaint from clinical staff is that students are not as willing or as keen as they once were to get involved in aspects of nursing care. Not all students follow this line, but there is growing concern that this may be a factor in the fall in standards of general nursing care.
