Abstract
A review is presented of problems faced by new supervisors, particularly in making the transition from a past role of one who empathizes with clients to one who has authority over staff. Suggestions are made for a supervisory training program directed at improving functioning in the administrative, supportive and educational comments of supervision. The paper includes a brief discussion of problems in the supervisory relationship itself and concludes with the mention of some tools a supervisor can use to assess his or her attitudes along a number of dimensions.
