Abstract

This article reports on a study designed to describe the characteristics of US corporate travel managers, departments and expenditures. It profiles key demographic characteristics of corporate travel managers including gender, educational levels, age, incomes, training on airline reservation systems and previous experience in the travel industry. Considerable variation in travel manager characteristics is found. The study also characterizes corporate travel departments in terms of their expenditures and organizational structures, and clearly demonstrates the large amount of money spent by US corporations on travel. The lack of research involving business travel is highlighted.
