Abstract
Neurotransmitters, acting through cell surface receptors linked to the production of second messengers, can increase the synthesis of both small-molecule and peptide neurotransmitters in the postsynaptic neuron via the activation of specific DNA regulatory elements that control gene expression. Short DNA elements that stimulate transcription in response to cAMP have been identified within the promoter regions of several neuropeptide genes. The cAMP regulatory element may serve to regulate and coordinate the synthesis of multiple transmitters expressed in a single cell in response to synaptic signals. Here we review approaches currently available to investigate the regulation of neurotransmitter gene expression.
