Reaction time for numerical coding and naming of numerals.

Compared RTs for 2 different identification tasks, numeral naming and quantity naming, and showed that RT was slower for named the different quantities of numerals than for naming the numerals themselves, even when the stimuli and naming responses were identical.

Abstract

Compared RTs for 2 different identification tasks, numeral naming and quantity naming. Exp. I used single Arabic numerals for the numeral naming task and corresponding amounts of arbitrary figures for the quantity naming task. Exp. II used the same Arabic numerals in different corresponding amounts for both tasks. 18 male undergraduate Ss served in each experiment, 9 under each task condition. Exp. I showed an insignificant difference between the 2 tasks. Exp. II showed that RT was slower for naming the different quantities of numerals than for naming the numerals themselves, even when the stimuli and naming responses were identical.
