ASSESSING LEARNING STRATEGIES: THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE LASSI

Abstract

This chapter discusses some of the current issues in learning strategies assessment and presents a description of the design and development of a specific instrument created to address some problems encountered in diagnosing student deficits. It presents the initial design and development of the learning and study strategies inventory . Currently, the majority of instruments available for assessing learning strategies focus on the individual's study practices. These instruments are generally used in high school or post-secondary educational or training settings for a number of purposes, including (1) predicting academic performance; (2) counseling students concerning their study practices; and (3) screening or criterion measures for study skills courses. Most of them cover traditional areas of study skills, such as note taking, time management, work habits, and student attitudes toward school and study. Generally, these instruments use a self-report format and sample a broad range of topics within the area of study skills.
