Abstract
Contrary to earlier reports, hypertension prevalence is increasing in the United States. Hypertension control rates, although improving, continue to be low. Programs targeting hypertension prevention and treatment are of utmost importance.

JAMAPrevalence and Trends in Obesity Among US Adults, 1999-2000
6,205 Citations2002Katherine M. Flegal
The increases in the prevalences of obesity and overweight previously observed continued in 1999-2000, and increases occurred for both men and women in all age groups and for non-Hispanic whites, non- Hispanic blacks, and Mexican Americans.
The LancetEffects of intensive blood-pressure lowering and low-dose aspirin in patients with hypertension: principal results of the Hypertension Optimal Treatment (HOT) randomised trial
5,765 Citations1998Lennart Hansson, Alberto Zanchetti +8 more
Intensive lowering of blood pressure in patients with hypertension was associated with a low rate of cardiovascular events and the potential benefit of a low dose of acetylsalicylic acid in the treatment of hypertension was assessed.
Tight blood pressure control and risk of macrovascular and microvascular complications in type 2 diabetes: UKPDS 38
4,820 Citations1998M R Stearne, S L Palmer +261 more
Three computational fluid methodologies are employed, of varying levels of complexity with coupled 0D boundary conditions, to simulate the haemodynamics within a patient-specific aorta, demonstrating that, in the context of certain clinical questions, the simpler analysis methods may capture the important characteristics of the flow field.
HypertensionPrevalence of Hypertension in the US Adult Population
2,997 Citations1995Vicki L. Burt, Paul K. Whelton +6 more
awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension have improved substantially since the 1976-1980 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey but continue to be suboptimal, especially in Mexican Americans.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
The LancetEffects of ACE inhibitors, calcium antagonists, and other blood-pressure-lowering drugs: results of prospectively designed overviews of randomised trials
1,782 Citations2000Blood Pressure Lowering Treatment Trialists' Collaboration
Strong evidence of benefits of ACE inhibitors and calcium antagonists is provided by the overviews of placebo-controlled trials, and data from continuing trials of blood-pressure-lowering drugs will substantially increase the evidence available about any real differences that might exist between regimens.

New England Journal of MedicineInadequate Management of Blood Pressure in a Hypertensive Population
968 Citations1998Dan R. Berlowitz, Arlene S. Ash +5 more
In a selected population of older men, blood pressure was poorly controlled in many, and those who received more intensive medical therapy had better control.
New England Journal of MedicineCharacteristics of Patients with Uncontrolled Hypertension in the United States
858 Citations2001David J. Hyman, Valory Pavlik
Most cases of uncontrolled hypertension in the United States consist of isolated, mild systolic hypertension in older adults, most of whom have access to health care and relatively frequent contact with physicians.
HypertensionDifferential Control of Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressure
420 Citations2000Donald M. Lloyd‐Jones, Jane C. Evans +4 more
Clinicians and policymakers should place greater emphasis on the achievement of goal systolic levels in all hypertensive patients, especially those who are older or obese or have target organ damage.
PubMedSample design: Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
329 Citations1992Trena Ezzati, James T. Massey +3 more
A detailed description of the sample design for the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1988-94 is presented, including a brief description of research that led to the choice of the final design.
Preventive MedicineValidity of Self-Reported Hypertension in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III, 1988–1991
269 Citations1997Clemencia M. Vargas, Vicki L. Burt +2 more
Self-reported hypertension may be used for surveillance of hypertension trends, in the absence of measured blood pressure, among non-Hispanic whites and non- Hispanic black women and persons with a medical visit in the past year.
HypertensionHypertension and Its Treatment in Postmenopausal Women
248 Citations2000Sylvia Wassertheil‐Smoller, Garnet L. Anderson +9 more
In conclusion, hypertension in older women is not being treated aggressively enough because a large proportion, especially those most at risk for stroke and heart disease by virtue of age, does not have sufficient blood pressure control.
Hypertension ResearchFramingham Study Insights into Hypertensive Risk of Cardiovascular Disease.
164 Citations1995William B. Kannel
Rational and efficient assessment of the hypertensive candidate for cardiovascular disease requires use of a cardiovascular risk profile evaluating the joint effect of multiple risk factors and effective treatment improves multivariate risk.
Journal of Cardiovascular PharmacologyHypertension as a Risk Factor for Cardiac Events—Epidemiologic Results of Long-Term Studies
129 Citations1993William B. Kannel
Cardiovascular risk ratios for hypertension diminish with advancing age, but this is offset by a higher absolute risk, making hypertension an important precursor of cardiovascular disease in the elderly.
HypertensionTreatment and Control of Hypertension in the Community
119 Citations2002Donald M. Lloyd‐Jones, Jane C. Evans +2 more
Cross-sectional national data indicate poor levels of treatment and control of hypertension, and greater emphasis is needed on achieving blood pressure control in all patients but particularly among older subjects and those with systolic hypertension.
Annals of EpidemiologyBirth Cohort Evidence of Population Influences on Blood Pressure in the United States, 1887–1994
72 Citations2001Donald Goff
The downward shifts at the 50th percentile and below unequivocally demonstrate a strong prevention effect in the U.S. population during the period 1887 through 1975, indicating that population-wide influences can alter favorably the distribution of BP throughout the whole population.

HypertensionTrends in Hypertension Prevalence, Treatment, and Control In a Well-Defined Older Population
59 Citations1998William H. Barker, John P. Mullooly +1 more
Findings parallel HBP trends in younger adults from National Health Survey data though there is evidence of a substantial gap in addressing the problem in the elderly, who constitute the population at greatest risk of cardiovascular complications of HBP.
Blood PressureIsolated Systolic Hypertension: an Important Cardiovascular Risk Factor
51 Citations1998THOMAS HEDNER ANDERS HIMMELMANN
The prevention and control of borderline isolated systolic hypertension is a key strategic challenge in the effort to prevent excess mortality attributable to blood pressure levels above normal.
