Abstract
ABSTRACT The psychology of leisure refers to 1) attempts to understand behavior and experiences that take place within a leisure context and 2) the psychological conception of leisure as a state of mind. This paper addresses questions within that latter frame work. What is leisure? The answer lies in a decision rather than a discovery. Are states of mind real? A positive answer does not imply a denial of social reality or its effect on mental state. Is leisure value-free? No, it is by its nature a positive state. Is leisure political? Yes, as a direct outcome of its value. What is the future of work? An analysis of the concepts job, work and leisure show the universal acceptance of the value of the leisure experience.
