Abstract
Abstract Black people are disproportionately represented in the British criminal justice system. This article reviews the research literature with a view to assessing explanatory frameworks. The evidence about prejudice, about differential and discriminatory practices in criminal justice and about black involvement in crime are considered in turn. In conclusion an assessment is made as to the explanatory value of respectively individualist, cultural or structural frameworks of analysis.
