Abstract
Selecting an assembly line has major strategic implications for a firm, yet few executives delve into the technical and behavioral ramifications of this decision. This article develops these implications by relating some observations distilled from assembly-line research by behavioral scientists and production management specialists, and it also considers the wide variety of lines in industry and proposes some guidelines for assembly-line selection and operation.
