Abstract
Vital to life, α-amino acids are the building blocks of peptides, proteins, and many other natural products, and the formation of optically active nonproteinogenic α-amino acids is an important research area. A catalytic enantioselective procedure is presented for the synthesis of optically active aromatic α-amino acids by addition of N-protected α-imino esters to aromatic compounds in a reaction catalyzed by chiral Lewis acids (see scheme; Pg=protecting group).
