Abstract
Problems created by the growing volume of urban road traffic are high on the political agenda in many countries, at both national and local levels; and with congestion, road safety and environmental pollution are of widespread concern to all sections of the community. A number of recent studies have attempted to quantify the impacts of traffic on urban life. Following on from a general recognition of the seriousness of the problem, several recent surveys have shown that the public accept the need to limit in some ways the amount of road traffic in large towns and cities. This paper reviews several of the public-opinion surveys in the U.K. The results have been found to be consistent in that the absolute percentage of people supporting a given measure may vary, but the rank orderings are the same.
